Agiorgitiko

General Description: Agiorgitiko, pronounced Ah-yor-YEE-te-ko, is a red wine grape variety native to Greece, specifically the Peloponnese region. Renowned for its versatility, Agiorgitiko produces a range of wines from soft, fresh rosés to deep, full-bodied reds. It is often celebrated for its rich fruit flavours and smooth tannins, making it one of Greece’s most beloved and prestigious varieties. This grape’s adaptability extends to both high-altitude vineyards, where it develops more pronounced acidity and complexity, and warmer lowland areas, where it achieves greater sweetness and body.

Primary Flavours:

  • Red fruits (such as cherries and raspberries)
  • Plum
  • Spice
  • Earthy undertones
  • Subtle hints of oak (when aged in barrels)

Taste Profile:

  • Sweet-Dry: Predominantly dry
  • Body: Medium to full body
  • Tannins: Medium
  • Acidity: Medium to high
  • ABV range: Generally 12% to 14%

Handling: Agiorgitiko wines, especially those intended to age, benefit from decanting to allow the wine to breathe and fully express its bouquet and flavours. Serving temperature should be slightly below room temperature, around 16°C to 18°C, to best appreciate its complexity and aromatic profile.

Food Pairing Suggestions: The versatility of Agiorgitiko allows it to pair beautifully with a wide range of dishes. It complements red meats, lamb, and game beautifully, especiallyagi when served with rich sauces or herbed accompaniments. For vegetarian options, dishes featuring mushrooms, lentils, or hearty grains make excellent companions. The wine’s balanced acidity also allows it to pair well with tomato-based dishes and mature cheeses.
