Alicante Bouschet

General Description: Alicante Bouschet is a unique grape variety, notable for being one of the few grapes with red flesh and juice, classified as a teinturier. It was originally bred in France in the 19th century by Henri Bouschet, who crossed Petit Bouschet with Grenache. This variety is admired for its deep, inky color, contributing significantly to blends’ intensity and depth. Alicante Bouschet has found a particularly successful home in Portugal’s Alentejo region, where it produces rich, full-bodied wines with a good tannic structure and alcohol level. The grape is also grown in Spain, France, and parts of the United States, where it is valued for its robustness and ability to withstand hot climates.

Primary Flavours:

  • Dark fruits (such as blackberry and plum)
  • Licorice
  • Black pepper
  • Earthy notes
  • Sometimes a hint of chocolate

Taste Profile:

  • Sweet-Dry: Dry
  • Body: Full body
  • Tannins: High
  • Acidity: Medium
  • ABV range: Typically 13.5% to 15%

Handling: Alicante Bouschet wines, due to their full body and tannic nature, may benefit from decanting to soften the tannins and allow the wine to express its full range of flavours. Serve at a slightly cooler than room temperature, around 16°C to 18°C, to best appreciate its complexity. These wines can age well, developing more complex flavours over time.

Food Pairing Suggestions: The robust character of Alicante Bouschet makes it an excellent match for equally hearty dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled and roasted meats, particularly beef and lamb, and is well-suited to accompany barbecued dishes. The wine’s earthy notes complement rich, savoury stews and casseroles. For vegetarian options, consider dishes with mushrooms or lentils as their earthiness and texture can stand up to the intensity of the wine. Hard, aged cheeses also pair well, offering a nice contrast to the wine’s tannic structure.
