Exploring Indigenous Wine Cultures Around the World

Winemaking using native grapes and techniques has a rich history across the globe. As the wine world expands beyond the classic regions of France, Italy and Spain, indigenous varieties and winemaking traditions offer exciting new discoveries for the adventurous oenophile.

The Rise of Pisco in Peru

The star spirit of Peru, Pisco has seen a resurgence in recent years. Made from Quebranta, Italia or Torontel grapes, authentic Pisco can only come from the regions of Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua and Tacna in Peru. Pisco expert Diego Loret de Mola recommends sipping Pisco Acholado, a blend of grape varieties, straight up at room temperature: “the flavours of cinnamon, ripe peach and a whiff of fresh lemon zing across your palate.” To truly immerse yourself in Peru’s wine culture, head to the Pisco Trail through Ica, visiting artisanal bodegas and indulging in a pisco sour cocktail along the way.

The Georgian Wine Revival

With a winemaking history dating back 8000 years, Georgia claims to have invented wine. Nearly 525 indigenous grape varieties are grown here, mostly for fermenting in huge terracotta amphora vessels. As wine authority Lisa Granik MW explains, “Saperavi and Rkatsiteli are Georgia’s most important grapes. Expect brambly fruit, grippy tannins and savoury, acidic bite.” Granik suggests pairing these full-bodied wines with the traditional Georgian feast, Khachapuri. The warming, gooey cheese bread is the perfect foil for the concentrated wines. Sample authentic amber-hued Georgian wines from producers such as Pheasant’s Tears and Okro’s Wines for a truly unique experience.

Innovating the Old with the New World

Across Australia, New Zealand and South Africa, a new generation of winemakers are shining a spotlight on indigenous varieties through innovation and a celebration of terroir. Pinotage, Cinsault, Semillon and Chenin Blanc are just a few of the heritage grapes being used to create globally acclaimed wines. Keep an eye out for labels like Mullineux, Basket Press Wines and TeMata Estate, where winemakers with a maverick spirit are taking native varietals to new heights.
