Melon de Bourgogne

General Description: Melon de Bourgogne, also simply known as Melon, is a white grape variety most famously associated with the Muscadet wine region near the city of Nantes, at the western end of the Loire Valley, France. This grape variety is the sole grape used in the Muscadet appellation, renowned for producing dry, light-bodied wines with high acidity and mineral qualities, making them excellent companions to seafood. Melon de Bourgogne was originally planted in the Loire Valley after frost killed off many of the vineyards in the 1700s. It has since become synonymous with the Muscadet region, where it thrives in the maritime climate, producing wines that are often aged “sur lie” (on the lees), which adds complexity and a slight creaminess to the wine’s texture.

Primary Flavours:

  • Green apple
  • Lemon

Handling: Melon de Bourgogne wines are best served chilled, at about 6°C to 8°C, to highlight their crisp acidity and refreshing minerality. These wines are typically consumed young to enjoy their vibrancy and freshness, although Muscadet Sèvre et Maine Sur Lie can benefit from short to medium-term ageing, which can enhance its texture and flavour complexity.

Food Pairing Suggestions: The crisp, acidic profile of Melon de Bourgogne makes it an ideal match for oysters and other shellfish, complementing the briny flavours of the seafood. It also pairs well with light fish dishes, salads, and goat cheese, making it a versatile wine for a variety of light and fresh culinary experiences. The wine’s minerality and acidity can also offer a refreshing contrast to creamy sauces and richly flavoured dishes, cleansing the palate with each sip.
