Mourvèdre

General Description: Mourvèdre, also known as Monastrell in Spain and Mataro in some New World regions, is a red grape variety that thrives in warm, sunny climates. It is particularly associated with the Bandol region on the Provence coast of France, where it produces deep, full-bodied, and tannic wines with a capacity for ageing. Mourvèdre is also a key component in the GSM (Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre) blends popular in the Southern Rhône and throughout the world. The grape is known for its dark fruit flavors, earthy and gamey notes, and a distinct peppery spice, contributing complexity and structure to blends.

Handling: Mourvèdre wines benefit from decanting, especially when young, to soften their tannins and allow the complex flavours to emerge. Serve at a slightly cooler temperature than room temperature, around 16°C to 18°C, to best appreciate their depth and structure. Mourvèdre’s robust tannins and acidity lend it well to aging, with top examples gaining complexity and a smoother texture over several years or even decades in the bottle.

Food Pairing Suggestions: The intensity and structure of Mourvèdre make it an ideal pairing for rich, hearty dishes such as grilled red meats, stews, and game. The wine’s peppery and earthy notes complement dishes with herbs and mushrooms. Mourvèdre can also stand up to the bold flavours of smoked and barbecued foods, making it a versatile choice for a variety of culinary traditions. Cheeses, especially aged varieties, can also pair well with Mourvèdre, balancing its tannic structure with their richness.
