Nerello Mascalese

General Description: Nerello Mascalese is a red grape variety indigenous to Sicily, Italy, particularly renowned for its cultivation on the slopes of Mount Etna. It is a key component in the red wines of Etna DOC, often blended with Nerello Cappuccio, another native Sicilian grape. Nerello Mascalese is celebrated for producing wines with a fine balance of fruit, acidity, and tannins, characterized by their elegance and ability to age gracefully. The wines often draw comparisons to those of Nebbiolo, given their similar structure and aromatic complexity. Nerello Mascalese offers flavours of red berries, herbs, and spices, with a notable minerality and earthiness contributed by the volcanic soils of its terroir.

Primary Flavours:

  • Red cherry
  • Raspberry
  • Orange zest
  • Rose
  • Herbaceous notes
  • Volcanic minerality

Taste Profile:

  • Sweet-Dry: Dry
  • Body: Medium body
  • Tannins: Medium to high
  • Acidity: High
  • ABV range: Typically between 13% to 14%

Handling: Nerello Mascalese wines are best served at a slightly cooler temperature than most red wines, around 16°C to 18°C, to enhance their aromatic profile and delicate structure. These wines have a significant ageing potential, with the ability to develop more complex flavours and aromas, including earthy and leathery notes, over time. Decanting is recommended for younger wines to soften the tannins and open up the flavours.

Food Pairing Suggestions: The elegance and acidity of Nerello Mascalese make it an excellent companion to a wide range of dishes. It pairs beautifully with grilled and roasted meats, including lamb, pork, and beef. The wine’s herbaceous and floral notes also complement dishes featuring mushrooms, herbs, and aromatic spices. Additionally, Nerello Mascalese can be paired with rich fish dishes, such as tuna or swordfish, offering a refreshing counterbalance to the richness of the seafood.
