Pinotage

General Description: Pinotage is a red wine grape that is South Africa’s signature variety, created in 1925 by crossing Pinot Noir and Cinsault (which was known as Hermitage in South Africa at the time), hence the name Pinotage. It was developed to combine the best qualities of both parent varieties, aiming for the finesse of Pinot Noir with the robustness and adaptability of Cinsault. Pinotage is known for producing deeply coloured, full-bodied wines with a unique flavour profile that can include notes of red and black fruits, earth, and in some cases, a distinctive smoky, tar-like character. The variety is versatile, used to make a range of wine styles from easy-drinking, fruity wines to more complex, barrel-aged offerings with significant ageing potential.

Primary Flavours:

  • Black cherry
  • Blackberry
  • Plum
  • Tobacco
  • Earth
  • Roasted meat

Taste Profile:

  • Sweet-Dry: Dry
  • Body: Medium to full body
  • Tannins: Medium to high
  • Acidity: Medium
  • ABV range: Typically between 13% to 14.5%

Handling: Pinotage benefits from being served at room temperature, around 16°C to 18°C, to fully appreciate its rich flavors and aromatics. The wine’s structure and tannic profile make it suitable for decanting, especially more robust and complex versions, which helps to soften the tannins and open up the wine’s bouquet. While some Pinotage wines are crafted for immediate enjoyment, others, particularly those that are barrel-aged, have the potential to age and develop more complex flavors over time.

Food Pairing Suggestions: The bold character of Pinotage makes it a great match for grilled and barbecued meats, including beef, lamb, and game, where the wine’s robust flavours can stand up to the rich and smoky tastes of the food. It also pairs well with hearty stews, spicy sausages, and dishes that feature roasted vegetables. The wine’s earthy undertones can complement dishes with mushrooms or smoked flavours, adding depth and complexity to the dining experience.
