Sagrantino

General Description:

Sagrantino is a red grape variety indigenous to the Umbria region of central Italy, particularly around the town of Montefalco. It is used to produce Sagrantino di Montefalco, one of Italy’s most tannic and robust wines, which can be made in dry and sweet (passito) styles. The grape is known for its thick skin, which contributes to the wine’s deep colour, high tannin levels, and potential for ageing. Sagrantino wines are celebrated for their intense flavours of dark fruits, spices, and earthy notes, along with a notable acidity that balances the wine’s power.Primary Flavours:

Taste Profile:

  • Sweet-Dry: Dry (although a sweet passito style is also produced)Body: Full bodyTannins: HighAcidity: Medium to highABV range: Typically between 14% to 15.5%

Handling: Due to its high tannin content, Sagrantino often benefits from extended ageing, which helps to soften the tannins and integrate the flavours. Wines made from Sagrantino are best served at room temperature, around 18°C to 20°C, after decanting to allow the wine to breathe and open up. The ageing potential for Sagrantino di Montefalco is significant, with top wines maturing well over a decade or more.Food Pairing Suggestions: The robust nature of Sagrantino pairs well with rich, hearty dishes such as grilled or roasted red meats, game, and dishes with bold umami flavours. The wine’s structure and intensity can also complement aged cheeses and rich pasta dishes with meat-based sauces. For the sweet passito style, consider pairing with dark chocolate desserts, blue cheeses, or as a contemplative sipping wine.
