Syrah

General Description: Syrah, also known as Shiraz in Australia and some other regions, is a dark-skinned red grape variety that is widely acclaimed for producing some of the world’s most powerful and full-bodied red wines. Originating from the Rhône Valley in France, Syrah is renowned for its deep colour, complex flavours, and ability to age well. It exhibits a wide range of flavours, from savoury black olive and pepper in cooler climates to luscious blackberry and plum in warmer regions. Syrah is versatile, used to make varietal wines as well as important blends, such as those in the southern Rhône.

Primary Flavours:

  • Blackberry
  • Blueberry
  • Black pepper
  • Olive
  • Smoked meat
  • Violet

Taste Profile:

  • Sweet-Dry: Dry
  • Body: Full body
  • Tannins: Medium to high
  • Acidity: Medium
  • ABV range: Typically between 13.5% to 15%

Handling: Syrah wines benefit from being served at a slightly cooler temperature than room temperature, around 16°C to 18°C, which helps to highlight their complex aromas and flavours. These wines can be aged, with many examples developing more nuanced and softer characteristics over time. Decanting is recommended for younger, more tannic Syrahs to soften their structure and enhance their complexity.

Food Pairing Suggestions: The robust nature of Syrah makes it an excellent match for equally hearty dishes such as grilled and roasted meats, barbecued dishes, and game. Its spicy and savoury undertones can complement rich stews, and dishes seasoned with herbs and spices. Syrah is also a great partner for hard cheeses and dishes with earthy flavours, such as mushrooms and root vegetables.
