Torrontés

General Description: Torrontés is a white grape variety uniquely associated with Argentina, where it has become the signature white wine grape of the country. It is particularly prevalent in the Salta region, in the north of Argentina, known for its high-altitude vineyards, which contribute to the grape’s aromatic intensity and acidity. Torrontés produces highly aromatic wines with floral and fruit-forward profiles, often compared to Muscat and Gewürztraminer for their perfumed nose. The wines are typically dry, with a fresh acidity and flavours that include peach, lemon, rose, and jasmine, making them distinctive and instantly recognisable.

Primary Flavours:

  • Peach
  • Apricot
  • Lemon
  • Rose
  • Jasmine
  • Herbal notes

Taste Profile:

  • Sweet-Dry: Dry
  • Body: Light to medium body
  • Tannins: N/A (as it is a white wine)
  • Acidity: Medium to high
  • ABV range: Typically between 12.5% to 13.5%

Handling: Torrontés wines are best served chilled, at about 6°C to 8°C, to enhance their aromatic qualities and refreshing palate. These wines are intended for early consumption, designed to be enjoyed young to capture the maximum expression of their vibrant floral and fruit characteristics. Ageing is not generally recommended for Torrontés, as its appeal lies in its youthful freshness.

Food Pairing Suggestions: The aromatic profile and acidity of Torrontés make it a versatile wine for pairing with a variety of dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with spicy and aromatic cuisines, such as Thai, Indian, and Latin American, where the wine’s floral and fruity notes can complement the flavours of the food. Torrontés also matches well with seafood, light poultry dishes, and salads, especially those with fruit elements or vinaigrettes. Additionally, it can be a delightful accompaniment to soft and semi-soft cheeses.
