Exploring Lesser-Known Wine Regions of the World

The Road Less Travelled

Whilst the likes of Bordeaux, Tuscany, and Napa Valley often hog the limelight, the world of wine offers a treasure trove of hidden gems waiting to be uncovered by the intrepid oenophile. From the sun-drenched valleys of Portugal to the ancient terroirs of Cyprus, these lesser-known regions promise a journey of delightful discovery for those willing to venture off the beaten path.

Bairrada, Portugal

Known as the “Burgundy of Portugal,” Bairrada is a region that punches well above its weight. Here, the star of the show is the Baga grape, a thick-skinned variety that produces wines with a robust character and impressive ageing potential. As Pedro Baptista, a renowned Portuguese winemaker, quips, “Baga is a diva – she demands attention, but rewards those who understand her ways.”

One of Bairrada’s standout producers is Quinta das Bágeiras, whose Baga Reserva is a masterclass in complexity. This wine pairs beautifully with hearty dishes like the region’s iconic roasted suckling pig, its firm tannins and vibrant acidity cutting through the rich flavours like a hot knife through butter.

Swartland, South Africa

South Africa’s Swartland region has been making waves in recent years, thanks to a new generation of winemakers who are challenging conventions and pushing boundaries. Here, the focus is on old-vine, drought-resistant varieties like chenin blanc and syrah, which thrive in the region’s arid climate.

A standout producer is Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines, whose old-vine chenin blanc is a masterpiece in a glass. Winemaker Andrea Mullineux describes it as “a wine that captures the essence of Swartland – rugged, earthy, and with a depth of character that belies its modest origins.”

This chenin blanc is a perfect accompaniment to dishes like smoked trout or roasted root vegetables, its vibrant acidity and nuanced flavours complementing the richness of the food.

Cyprus – A Vinous Odyssey

Steeped in history and tradition, the island of Cyprus offers a vinous odyssey like no other. Here, ancient grape varieties like maratheftiko and xynisteri have been cultivated for millennia, their roots tracing back to the very origins of winemaking.

SODAP Wines, a family-owned estate in the Paphos region, is at the forefront of reviving Cyprus’ vinous heritage. Their maratheftiko reserve is a testament to the island’s winemaking prowess, with its bold, spicy character and velvety tannins that beg for a hearty moussaka or a slow-roasted lamb dish.

“Maratheftiko is a grape that captures the spirit of Cyprus,” says Dimitris Stavrinides, SODAP’s patriarch. “It’s a wine that demands patience and respect, but rewards you with an experience that transcends mere flavours.”

Embrace the Unknown

While the established wine regions will always hold a special place in our hearts, it’s the lesser-known gems that remind us of the boundless diversity and potential of the wine world. So, the next time you find yourself reaching for that familiar bottle, pause and consider embarking on a journey into the unknown – you might just discover your new favourite wine region.
