The Best Wine Regions to Visit in 2024

With new regions putting themselves firmly on the wine tourism map and old favourites continuing to improve, 2024 is shaping up to be an excellent year for wine adventures. We’ve compiled a list of the top destinations where you can sip stunning vintages against some of the world’s most beautiful backdrops.

First on our list is Portugal’s stunning Douro Valley. Its steep, terraced hills and winding river provide the perfect scenery to accompany vibrant ports and complex reds. Top pick for food pairing is the salty Stilton blue cheese, which contrasts beautifully with the sweet fortified wines. Brands to look out for include Sandeman and Taylor’s. Writer Hugh Johnson described it as “one of the most beautiful places on earth”.

Next up is Italy’s sun-drenched Sicily. Enjoy the island’s famous seafood alongside vibrant whites like Grillo and Nero d’Avola. Top British wine critic Jancis Robinson MW recommends the higher altitude regions around Mount Etna for their “fascinating red and whites”. She specifically calls out the Tornatore Etna Rosso for its “distinctive spicy, herbal flavours”.

No list would be complete without France’s famous Champagne region. Its elegant bubblies pair delightfully with buttery pastries and brioche. When visiting the caves, look out for smaller grower champagne brands like Bereche et Fils, who offer a more bespoke experience. Wine legend Tom Stevenson calls Bereche’s cuvées “divinely feminine, sculpted miracles”.

Off the beaten track is England’s South Downs, whose chalky soils and cool climate make for world-class fizz. Pair their zesty sparkling wines with local oysters or fish and chips with vinegar. Ridgeview is considered one of the pioneers. Wine writer Oz Clarke declared their Blanc de Noirs “utterly delicious, quite beautiful, and very close now to champagne”.

Wherever your wine adventures take you, remember when in doubt, keep it cool, dark and elevated. And most importantly, enjoy the journey!
